Question 715600: If two opposite sides of a square are increased by 10 meters and the other sides are decreased by 5 meters, the area of the rectangle that is formed is 76 square meters. Find the area of the original square.
Answer by mananth(16946) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let the side of square be x
x+10
and x-5 are the sides of the rectangle
(x+10)(x-5)= 76
x^2-5x+10x-50=76
x^2+5x-126=0
x^2+14x-9x-126=0
x(x+14)-9(x+14)=0
(x+14)(x-9)=0
x=-14 OR 9
ignore negative
side of square is 9
