Question 704081: Two marathon runners leave the same point at the same time and travel in opposite directions. one runs at a rate that is 0.75 miles per hour faster than the other. after 3 hours they are 44.25 miles apart. how far did each runner travel?
Answer by sachi(548) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let one runner runs at x miles/hr
the other runs at (x+0.75) miles/hr
they travel in opposite directions
in one hr the distance between them is x+(x+0.75) miles=2x+0.75
so in 3 hrs the distance=3(2x+0.75)=6x+2.25
so 6x+2.25=44.25
or 6x=44.25-2.25=42
or x=7 miles/hr=speed of one runner
speed of other DISABLED_event_one= 7.75 miles/hr
the distance traveled in 3 hrs by
1st runner=7*3=21 iles
2nd runner=7.75*3 =23.25 miles
