Volume is in cubic inches, not square inches. You can't make a box just by cutting the corners out of a square; you have to fold up the sides. Given that, you divide

to determine that the area of the base of the box must be 
. Since you have cut squares out of the corners of a square, the shape of the base of the manufactured box must also be square. Therefore the measure of each side of the base is 
. Since there is a square cut out of each corner of the original square, the original dimension has to be 
greater than the measure of the side of the base of the manufactured box. You can do your own arithmetic.
