Let
represent the number of field goals and
represent the number of free throws.
Solve the 2X2 system. And no, 5 field goals = 10 points and 2 free throws = 2 points for the required 12 points, but 5 + 2 is only 7 shots, not 9.

Answer by murphworld(1) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
2-Point Shots - 3
Free Throws - 6
3(2) = 6
6(1) = 6
9 Shots / 12 Points

While your answer of 5 two-point shots, and 2 free throws sum to 12 points, they only total 7 shots (5 + 2), so this is INCORRECT!! The correct solution is as follows:
Let amount of 2-point shots scored be T, and amount of free throws, F
Then: T + F = 9 ----- eq (i)
Also, 2T + 1F = 12 ------ eq (ii)
- T = - 3 ----- Subtracting eq (ii) from eq (i)
T, or amount of 2-point shots he made = , or
3 + F = 9 ----- Substituting 3 for T in eq (i)
F, or amount of free throws he made = 9 - 3, or
