Question 655277: if a 40-inch board is cut into three pieces so that the second piece is 4 times as long as the first piece and the third piece is 5 times as long as the first piece. If x represents the length of the first piece, find the length of all three pieces
Answer by checkley79(3341) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
LET X BE THE LENGTH OF THE FIRST PIECE.
LET 4X BE THE LENGTH OF THE SECOND PIECE.
LET 5X BE THE LENGTH OF THE THIRD PIECE.
X+4X+5X=40
10X=40
X=40/10
X=4 INCHES FOR THE SMALLEST PIECE.
4*4=16 INCHES FOR THE SECOND PIECE.
5*4=20 INCHES FOR THE LONGEST PIECE.
PROOF:
4+16+20=40
40=40
