a. Either use the formula for the horizontal ( in this case) coordinate of the vertex of the parabola, namely or set the first derivative equal to zero and solve for the same value to get the time that the ball reaches its maximum height. Then evaluate the function at that value to find the value of the maximum height.

b. Set the function equal to 0 and then solve the quadratic equation. Discard the negative root.
