FOr a remodeling job, an architect suggested increasing the sides of a square patio by 3 feet per side. This made the area of the new patio 49 square feet. What was the area of the original patio?

Let original dimensions be x by x
Then original area = x^2
----
New Area = (x+3)^2 = x^2 + 6x+9
----
Equations:
New area - old area = 49 sq ft
x^2+6x+9 - x^2 = 49
6x+9 = 49
6x = 40
x = 20/3 ft
---
Original Area = x^2 = (20/3)^2 = 400/9 = 44.44 sq ft.
