Question 641724: Instructions
Yesteryears Antique Stores, Inc. is owned and operated by Jack Green. He has been a respected antiques dealer for over 30 years. He owns 3 antiques stores: One in Mobile, one in Houston TX, and one in Miami FL.

Mr. Green has been successfully importing and exporting antiques from around the world. He sells high-end items imported from Europe and Asia in his 3 retail stores. Recent changes in the economy and in the cost of importing (e.g., higher fuel costs, etc.) has decreased his sales. He sells some items using Internet auction sites (e.g., eBay), but the cost of shipping has also posed difficulties for him.

Mr. Green hires employees with expertise in specific areas (e.g., antique clocks, early American furniture, rare coins, antique advertising memorabilia, etc.). He recruits from the regions of each store employees. For example, he recruits employees for his Houston store from around the Houston metropolitan statistical area (MSA). He recruits for his Miami store from around the Miami area. Experienced, expert employees are hard to find and he wishes to retain them, not only for their expertise, but also to help with establishing long-term relationships with customers (many of Mr. Green’s customers are repeat buyers).

Assume that you work for Mr. Green on a part-time basis helping him with office work. He is interested in getting your opinions on his turnover and absenteeism data. He hands to you the Spreadsheet titled “Turnover and Absence Data: Yesteryears Antique Stores.” The data include all 3 locations combined.

Based on the data contained in the spreadsheet (attached), Mr. Green would like for you to answer the following questions. Note: Please use complete sentences. Indicate each question you are answering by number. Please do not rewrite the question; just indicate the number.

1. Calculate the following statistics and place them on Mr. Green’s spreadsheet: (a) Total Turnover %; (b) Avoidable Turnover %; (c) Absenteeism Rate %. Include your responses to the spreadsheet in your assignment. Please make sure that your results are carried out to at least 1 decimal place.

Interpret the turnover and absenteeism rates for Yesteryears. In other words, what would you tell Mr. Green about his turnover and absenteeism trends?

Mr. Green wants to know if his turnover rate is “bad.” What will you tell him? Make sure to justify your response. You might consider the idea of functional and dysfunctional turnover.

What additional data would you recommend that Mr. Green collect to help better understand the turnover and absenteeism data? How might he collect this information (be specific)?
