x+y=5;
10x=4y
5x=2y
2x+2y=10
2x+5x=10
7x=10
x=10/7
10/7+y=5
10/7+y=35/7
y=25/7

The other tutor just found the two times, not the distances.
You'd have to multiply them by the rates to get the distances.

Make this DRT chart:

          DISTANCE    RATE    TIME = }
going        x         10         x/10 
coming       x          4         x/4
total       2x                     5

                    +  = 5

Multiply through by 20

       20· + 20· = 20·5

            2x + 5x = 100
                 7x = 100
                  x =  =  miles

So he will ride a total of  miles
