Let x be the number and 1/x is its reciprocal. 

Multiply x to both sides to get rid of x in the denominator.

Then transpose 3x to the left side, and you will get a quadratic equation.

Factor that.

If any of the factors is equal to zero, then the equation becomes true. The answer then is 1 or 2.
