Question 62282: I have to construct a frequency distribution for the data.
here is the problem and it's not in the book it's homework

a random sample of 30 male college students is selected. Each student is asked his height(to the nearest inch). the heights are as follows.
72,70,68,72,74,71,71,69,73,71,73,75,66,,67,75,74,73,71,72,67,72,68,67,71,73,71,72,70,73,70.
and i must find the mean, median. mode and the mid range. can you please break down the steps. i have a test tonight. Please because i don't want to fail.
thank you karseemia king.

Hey Karseemia, let's go through step by step for each of the statistical calculations. By the end we should have the mean, median, mode and the mid range for the set of data you have provided.

Let's start with the mean. Mean is another word for average. Hence, we add all the numbers up and divide this quantity by the number of numbers in the data set. The sum of all the heights is 2131 and there are 30 samples. When we divide (2131/30) we get 71.033.

Now let's see what the mode is. Remember, the mode is the value that occurs the highest number of times. These simply involves counting the number of times each value occurs. A good way to approach this for complex sets of data is by drawing a frequency table. Looking at your data we can tell that the mode is 71, which occurs 6 times.

Next we'll ind the median. The median is simply obtained by arranging your data in order (from lowest to highest preferably) and finding the number at the center. So here's your data set organised:

66,67,67,67,68,68,69,70,70,70,71,71,71,71,71,71,72,72,72,72,72,73,73,73,73,73,74,74,75,75

Since the data set is made up of 30 numbers, the median is between the 15th and 16th number (since 30/2 is even). The 15th and 16th numbers are 71 and 71. So we add the two and divide by two to get: 71. The median is 71.

Now we can also find the mid range. This is simply the biggest number subtracted by the smallest number and then divided by two. So, in this case: (75-66)/2 = 4.5. The midrange is 4.5.

Hope this has been helpful. Good Luck on your test!
