A two volume set of math books is on a shelf in the usual manner, the books sit upright and are side by side.  

The total thickness of each volume is 2 inches and the thickness of each cover is 1/8 inch.

distance between the first page of Volume I and the last page of Volume II?

 2" + 2(1/8)" + 2" =  2" + 1/4" + 2" = 4.25"
