In Anchorage, the number of film-goers who read the books before seeing The Lord of teh Rings films was 3 1/4 times the number of film-goers who did not read the books beforehand. If 39,000 film-goers read teh books first, how many went to the films?

The number of readers is 39000 which is 3 1/4 times as many as the none readers. 3 1/4 can be written as the improper fraction 13/4.
so Multiply each side by


So the total movie goers are 39 000 + 12 000 = 51 000
