Guppies cost 20 cents less than swordtails. Three guppies and 4 swordtails cost $2.83. How much do Guppies cost?
Let the price of guppies be: x
Then if guppies are 20 cents less than swordtails, swordtails cost 20 cents more.
Let the price of swordtails be: x+20
To avoid decimals let the total cost be 283 cents.
3x+4(x+20)=283
4x+3x+80=283
7x+80=283
7x+80-80=283-80
7x=203
7x/7=203/7
x=29 cents
The guppies cost 29 cents or $.29, whichever you prefer.
For fun find out that the swordtails cost.......................................................................................................................49 cents.
Check to see if at that price 3 guppies and 4 swortails really do cost $2.83.
