Question 601349: The highest mountain peak in the world is Mt. Everest, located in the Himalayas. The height of this enormous mountain was determined in 1856 by surveyors using trigonometry long before the mountain was first climbed in 1953. This difficult measurement had to be done from a great distance. At an altitude of 14,545 feet on a different mountain, the straight line distance to the peak of Mt. Everest is 27.0134 miles and its angle of elevation is 5.52 degrees. Approximate the height in feet of Mt. Everest. (1 mile = 5280 feet).

At an altitude of 14,545 feet on a different mountain, the straight line distance to the peak of Mt. Everest is 27.0134 miles and its angle of elevation is 5.52 degrees.
Approximate the height in feet of Mt. Everest. (1 mile = 5280 feet)
:
Using the sine of 5.52, and hypotenuse of 27.0134 mi, find h (height dif between the two mountain peaks
sin(5.52) =
h = .0962 * 27.134
h = 2.6 mi; 2.6 * 5280 = 13730.572 ft
13730.572 + 14545 = 28,265 ft
