Question 597599: Find the domain of f(x)=x+6/x^2-4
Answer by math-vortex(648) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Hi, there--
.
The domain of a function is the set of all the values that x can be and have the function be defined for the set of real numbers. Make sure that the function I use in the solution is the same as the function in your book. It is not exactly what you typed, but I'm guessing that it's what you meant.
.
We need to check the function to see which values would make it undefined. There are two things to look for. First, will any value of x cause us to take the square root of a negative number. There are no square roots in the function, so we are good there.
.
.
The second thing we need to check for is division by zero (a big no-no!) So we set the denominator equal to zero and solve for x.
.
OR
.
So, x cannot be -2 or 2, because we would be dividing by zero. Every other real number is part of the domain.
.
Domain:(-infinity,-2)U(-2,2)U(2, infinity)
