Question 59153: Martina leaves home at 9 A.M., bicycling at a rate of 24 mi/h. Two hours later, John leaves, driving at the rate of 48 mi/h. At what time will John catch up with Martina?
Answer by 303795(602)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
At 11 am when John sets off Martina has already covered 24 * 2 = 48 miles.
If timing is started at 11 am then the distance John has covered will be 48t.
The distance Martina has travelled will be 24t + 48.
These will be the same when 48t = 24t + 48
48t - 24t = 24t + 48 - 24t
24t = 48
t=2
So John will catch up with Martina 2 hours after he sets off eg 1.00 pm
