Let the number be x.
Difference of the number and 5 = x -5
2 times the difference of the number and 5 = 2(x - 5)
3 times the difference of the number and 5 = 3(x - 5)
Sum of 2 times and 3 times the difference of the number and 5 = 2(x - 5)+ 3(x-5)
= 5( x- 5)
Difference of the number and 1 is = x -1
4 times the difference of the number and 1 is = 4 (x -1)
So, 5 (x -5) = 4(x -1)
or 5x - 25 = 4x - 4
or 5x - 4x - 25 = -4
or x - 25 = -4
or x = 25 -4
or x = 21
Hence, the number is 21
