Question 569466: A rectangular tank with a base 4 feet by 5 feet and a height of 4 feet is full of water. The water weighs 62.4 pounds per cubic foot. How much work is done in pumping water out over the top edge in order to empty (a) half of the tank? (b) all of the tank?
a)2496 ft-lbs
b)9984 ft-lbs
Explain why the answer in part b is not exactly twice the answer in part a.
I figured out the amount of work (answers above), but I do not know how to explain the answers.

I am going to guess that it is because, when you pump out the lower half of the tank, (which you would have to do to empty the tank), you have to pump it higher than when you pump out the top half.
