Question 56913: There were a number of bats in a case.
2 bats could see out of their right eye
3 bats could see out of their left eye
4 bats could not see out of their left eye
5 bats could not see out of their right eye
What is the least number of bats in the case?
What might their eyesight have been?
Were they totally blind or only blind in right or left eye?

My 1st step to solving the problem - 1 bat in each corner, facing that side of the box. I might have over analyzed the question because bats can see in the dark. It's the light that would render them blind. Now, my train of thought can't get pass this concept. Please help me with this algebra problem, am in the eighth grade. Thank you

Suppose there are 2 bats that can see with their both eyes.
This means you already got 2 bats who can see with left and 2 who can see with right.
Suppose there is 1 bat with a good left eye, but a bad right eye.
We now have:
2 bats who can see out of their right eye
3 bats who can see out of their left eye
1 bat who cannot see out of his right eye
Now suppose there are 4 bats who are entirely blind.
We now have:
2 bats who can see out of their right eye
3 bats who can see out of their left eye
1 + 4 bats who cannot see out of their right eye
4 bats who cannot see out of their left eye
This means the minimum of bats is 7.
