Question 55345: Gumballs cost 5 cents each. There are gum balls of 5 different colors in the machine. You can't see them because it is dark. What would be the least number of nickels you would have to spend to be sure of getting at least 3 gum balls of the same color?

i keep getting 11 as an answer, but am not sure if i am right. can u help?

Right.
If you don't get three earlier you could
get to a point where you have two of each
of the 5 colors---that makes 10 nickels.
The next nickel is bound to get you three
of some color.
