Question 549882: You own six action movie DVDs. One third of your DVDs are comedies. Action and comedy DVDs are half of the movies you own. How many comedy DVDs do you own?

This is the type of problem where you have to choose meaningful variable names (c for comedy for example) and write all the info down)
We know that action movies=6
a=6
And our actions plus comedies is half our total
a+c=(1/2)t
Also comedies are 1/3 of the total
(1/3)t=c
Now we want to get one equation with just one variable (so we can solve it). Lets plug in 6 for a and 1/3 t for c
6+(1/3)t=(1/2)t
multiplying everything by 6 will clear out all those pesky fractions
36+2t=3t
We find that the total is 36, comedies are 1/3 of the total so they are 12
t=36
c=12
