x = points scored in game 3.

x+14 = points scored in game 1.

The sum of points they scored is x + x+14 + 29 and that sum must be less than 77.

Add the x's, add the numbers.

Subtract 43 from each side.

Divide both sides by 2.

At most, they scored 16 points in the first game.

BTW, it's means it is. For possessive use its.
