Question 524870: use the five steps for problem solving to answer the following questions. Please show all work! A 40foot beam is to be cut in two if one portion is one third the length of the other portion, what are the two lengths of the portions?
Answer by Maths68(1474) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let
Other portion = x
One portion = x*1/3 = x/3
one portion + other portion = Total Length
x/3+x=40
(x+3x)/3=40
4x=40*3
4x=120
4x/4=120/4
x=30
Other portion = x = 30 feet
One portion = x*1/3 = x/3 = 30/3 = 10 feet
