Question 522760: Dear Tutor,
Could you help me find a answer to the following question. I would like to see the formula that you use as I cannot get an answer.
The question is. Cheynne works an 8 hour day starting at 07h30 in the morning. It is now two hours, 20 minutes before the end of her working day. What is the time now.
I converted the 8 hours into minutes. 480 minutes and then I dont know how to proceed.
I would really appreciate it if you could help me.
Thank you very much for your time,
regards
Tracey

Hi Tracey --
You could work this problem by converting to minutes, but I think this is making the problem harder than it is.
.
You can actually do this problem in your head, by treating it as a "counting" exercise. It will give you practical experience to do it this way.
.
First, let's assume that Cheyenne does not take time off to eat lunch. She starts work at 7:30 a.m. At what time does she complete 5 hours of work. You can add 5 hours to 7 hours and 30 minutes and you get 12 hours and 30 minutes. So at 12:30 she has completed 5 hours and still has 3 hours left to work. Three hours after 12:30 it will be (counting it out) 1:30, 2:30, 3:30. So at 3:30 she will be done for the day.
.
But the problem says she has 2 hours and 20 minutes left to work. So we need to back up 2 hours and 20 minutes from 3:30. We can back up the 2 hours by counting backward from 3:30 as 2:30 and then 1:30. So at 1:30 she would have 2 hours left to work. But she has another 20 minutes more than that still to go. So we need to go backwards from 1:30 20 minutes more. You could count backwards 20 minutes from the 30 minutes or just subtract 20 from 30 and get 10 minutes. So at 1:10 she will still have 2 hours and 20 minutes to go until the time is 3:30 and she can quit. (Think in reverse order that at 1:10 in 20 minutes it will be 1:30 and 2 hours more than that will make it 3:30.)
.
Hopefully this will help you to work time problems just by thinking them through. However, if it is too confusing for you to think about it in these terms, please post your problem again and get some more help from another tutor.
