Express all dollar values in thousands -- gets rid of a bunch of pesky zeros.
Let 
represent the number of years on the job.

. $36K plus $2K per year.
\ =\ 2x\ +\ 36)
Salary #2 )
. $28K plus $3K per year.
\ =\ 3x\ +\ 28)
They will be making the same salary when \ =\ S_1(x))
