Question 500929: Javier invests money in two accounts. He invests twice as much in an account paying 10% simple interest as he does in an account paying 5%. If he earns $187.50 in one year from both accounts combined, how much did he invest altogether?
Answer by mananth(16946)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
-------------- 5.00% per annum ------------- x
------------- 10.00% per annum ------------ y 2 x
total investment x+2y
Interest----- $187.50

5.00% x + 10.00% * 2 x = $187.50
0.05 x + 0.10 * 2 x = $187.50
0.05 x + 0.2 x = $187.50
0.25 x = $187.50
/ 0.25
x= $750.00
2 x = $1,500.00 -------------

CHECK
$37.50 + $150.00 = $187.50
