Question 493569: A theater sells adult tickets for $8 and children’s tickets for $5. If a total of $236 was taken in on
sales of 34 total tickets, then how many adult tickets were sold?

Answer by Maths68(1474)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let
x=Adult Ticket
y=Children Ticket
Cost of Adult ticket = 8$
Cost of Children ticket = 5$
Cost of x tickets sold=8x
Cost of y tickets sold=5y
Adult tickets sold + children’s tickets sold = Total tickets sold
x+y=34
x=34-y………………(1)
Cost of Adult tickets sold + Cost of Children’s tickets sold = Cost of total tickets sold
8x+5y=236……..(2)
Put value of x from (1) to (2)
8x+5y=236……..(2)
8(34-y )+5y=236
272-8y+5y=236
-3y=236-272
-3y=-36
-3y/-3=-36/-3
y=12
Put value of y in (1)
x=34-y………………(1)
x=34-12
x=22
12 Children tickets and 22 Adult tickets were sold.
