Question 465752: A rain gutter is formed by bending up the sides of a 42-inch-wide rectangular metal sheet.
A) find a function that models the cross-sectional area of the gutter in terms of x.
Here is what I have so far, but don't know if it's on the right track:
A(x)=42-(1/3x)^2

A rain gutter is formed by bending up the sides of a 42-inch-wide rectangular metal sheet.
:
Let the cross section look like something like this, where x is the height and w is the width.
:
x|_w_|x
:
then
2x + w = 42
w = (42-2x)
:
A) find a function that models the cross-sectional area of the gutter in terms of x.
A = x * w
Replace w with (42-2x)
A(x) = x(42-2x)
A(x) = -2x^2 + 42x
