Question 450310: On an NBA team the two forwards measure 6'8" and 6'6" and the two guards measure 6'0" and 5'9" tall. How tall a center should they hire if they wish to have a starting team average height of at least 6'5"?
Answer by rwm(914)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
To get an average you add them all up and divide by how many there are.
There will be five after we include the new center
let's call the center c
so add up the four players +c and divide by 5 and set it equal to 6'5" which is 77 inches
so you have to convert them all to inches or feet
or you can take each one and
add or subtract their heights from 6'5"
6'8" is +3
6'6 is +1
6'0 is -5
5'9" is -3+-5=-8
so we have
+3+1-5-8 which is +4-13=
-9
so the new center has to be 9 inches more than 6'5"
