Question 448353: the length and width of a rectangle are 6 m and 4 m. when eacch dimension is increased by the same amount, the area of the new rectangle is 50. find the dimensions of the new rectangle
Answer by mananth(16946)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
length =6
width = 4
increased by x
new length = 6+x
new width = 4+x
Area = (6+x)(4+x)
50 = 24+10x+x^2
x^2+10x-26=0
Find the roots of the equation by quadratic formula
a= 1 ,b= 10 ,c= -26

b^2-4ac=100 + 104
b^2-4ac=204

x1=(-10 +14.28)/2
x1=2.14
x2=(-10 -14.28)/2
x2= -12.14
ignore negative value.
x= 2.14, add this to old length
new length = 8.14
new width = 6.14
