Question 434907: Two taxis leave the same place, going in opposite directions. The 2nd taxi is going 5 mph faster than the 1st taxi. After 4 hours, they are 500 miles apart. What is the speed of the 2nd taxi?
Answer by htmentor(1343)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let s = the speed of the 1st taxi
Then the speed of the 2nd taxi = s + 5
Since they are traveling in opposite directions their relative speed is 2s + 5
In 4 hrs they are 500 miles apart
So 2s + 5 = 500/4
2s + 5 = 125
s = 60 mph
So the speed of the 2nd taxi is 60 + 5 = 65 mph
