How much pure acid and how many liters of a 10% acid solution should be mixed to get 12L. of a 40% acid solutions?
.
Let x = amount (liters) of pure acid
then
12-x = amount of 10% acid
.
x + .10(12-x) = .40(12)
x + 1.2 - .10x = 4.8
.90x + 1.2 = 4.8
.90x = 3.6
x = 4 liters
