The setup looks like this:
.60(6) + 0(x) = .40(6+x)
3.6 = 2.4 + .4x
1.2 = .4x
x = 3 qts.

You start out with 6 quarts of 60% alcohol
60% of 6 = 3.6 quarts alcohol
The amount of alcohol never changes
(amount alcohol / total mixture = fraction of alcohol)
let w = amount of water to add
3.6 / (w + 6) = .40
.4w + 2.4 = 3.6
.4w = 1.2
w = 3
add 3 quarts of water to get a 40% solution of alcohol
check
3.6 / (w + 6) = .40
3.6 / (3 + 6) = .40
3.6/9 = .4

Initial solution is 6 quarts. 60% of it is alcohol, giving us 3.6 quarts alcohol. The remaining 40% (2.4 quarts) is water. how much does the total have to be so that 3.6/T=40%? let's c 360/40=9. 9-3.6=5.4, we need 5.4 quarts.. o it's 2 quarts? ..how did you do it?
