The Calgary Flames played 82 games. Their wins and losses totaled 71. They tied 14 times fewer than they lost. How many wins, losses and ties did they have?

Write an equation for each statement:

The Calgary Flames played 82 games.
W + L + T = 82
:
Their wins and losses totaled 71.
W + L = 71
:
They tied 14 times fewer than they lost.
T = L - 14
:
How many wins, losses and ties did they have?:
:
If they played 82 and wins and loses = 71, obviously there were 11 ties
:
T = L - 14
11 = L - 14
11 + 14 = L
L = 25 losses
then
W + L = 71
W + 25 = 71
W = 71 - 25
W = 46 wins

46 + 25 + 11 = 82
