What was the percent increase in countries outside the United States in 1950 to 1997?

To find the % increase, you use the quotient (amount of increase)/ (original amount)
If I understand you completely, it only wants the percent increase for countries outside the US.
Begin with 1950, that would be your original amount. If you look at the world totals in 1950 it was 10,557 and the US had 8,006 of those so you subtract and countries other than the US produced 2571. That will be the bottom number or the orginal amount.
Now to find the amount of increase, you would subtract the amount they are making now and the original amount to find out how many more they are making now.
To begin: World total in 1997 is 53,463, so you need to subtract the 12,119 the US makes which gives you 41,344 that countries besides the US makes.
To find the amount of increase you subtract the 2571 in 1950 from the 41,344 in 1997, which equals 38773.
% of increase = 38773/2571
When you divide that you get 15.08 (rounded). To make that a % you move the decimal 2 places to the right.
Therefore you get a percent increase of 1508%
