Question 403612: One number is 25% of another. The larger number is 12 more than the smaller. What are the numbers?
Answer by robertb(5830) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
S = 0.25L, and
L = 12 + S
==> L = 12 + 0.25L, or
0.75L = 12, or
L = 12/0.75, or
L = 16, the larger number.
==> S = 0.25L = 0.25*16 = 4, the smaller number.
The numbers can't be 36 and 48, because the smaller number, 36, is NOT 25% of 48.
