Question 40199: Social science. In a town election, the winning candidate had 220 more votes
than the loser. If 810 votes were cast in all, how many votes did each candidate
receive?
Thank you!!!

Answer by fractalier(6550)   (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let the totals for each candidate be x and y.
So we have
x - y = 220 and
x + y = 810
Now add these equations...we get
2x = 1030
x = 515 and then
y = 295
