Let the 2 numbers be x and y
The sum of two numbers is 1457
x + y = 1457 .......eq 1
Four times the first number minus twice the second number is 8.
4x - 2y = 8 .......eq2
Multiply eq1 by 2 and add with eq 2
2x + 2y = 2914
4x - 2y = 8
--------------------------
6x = 2922
x = 2922 / 6 = 487
Substitute x = 487 in either eq1 or eq2
x + y = 1457
487 + y = 1457
y = 1457 - 487
y = 970
The largest number is 970
