Question 396475: Our planet has a diameter of approximately 7,900 miles. The surface of the planet consists of approximately 197,000,000 square miles. About 70% of that is covered by water, which leaves about 57,900,000 square miles of land surface. I have heard it argued that we have plenty of Earth surface to support a growing population and population growth is good for a healthy and growing economy. We may recognize that we are not standing elbow to elbow just yet, and living in the USA, many feel that we have plenty of room to expand our cities and development. Before we even consider things like urban sprawl and resource needs for human population, let us determine just how much land there is per person on this entire planet. We are NOT considering political boundaries or countries, but simply look at how many acres of land there are for each human being on this Earth, if we divide the land equally.
At the moment there are over 6.89 billion people in the world.
There are about 57,900,000 square miles of land surface on this planet. There are 640 acres in one square mile.
How many acres of land surface are there per person?

------------
Area = 5.79E7*6.4E2 acres = 3.7056E10 acres
3.7056E10 acres/6.89E9 people =~ 5.378 acres per person
