On Monday, a local hamburger shop sold a combined total of 492 hamburgers and cheeseburgers. The number of cheeseburgers sold was three times the number of hamburgers sold. How many hamburgers were sold on Monday?

Let x and 3x represent the number of hamburgers and cheeseburgers sold respectively

Question states***

 x + 3x = 492

solving for x

   4x = 492

    x = 123, the number of hamburgers sold on Monday
