II.Writing as we Read***

 ( x + 8) + (4x + 8) = 61

III.Solving for x

      5x = 45      

        x = 9, John's age NOW,  His father is NOW 36 

     

IV. CHECKING Our Answer***

   9+8 + 36+8 = 17 + 44 = 61
