find out which numbers cannot be used in place of the variable the rational expression.
Assume it is:
Remember that division by 0 is not permitted,
Therefore the denominator cannot equal 0
Find these forbidden values for y:
y^2 - y - 6 = 0
Factors to
(y-3)(y+2) = 0
Two solutions
y = +3
y = -2
These two values for y cannot be used
:
:
Check this, substitute these two values in y^2 - y + 6, confirm that it equals 0
