use the formula for finding the average:
sum/number=average
sum =88+72+85+76+x since you don't know the value of the fifth point, substitute "x"
.
number = 5
average = 83
.
so,
(88+72+85+76+x)/5=83 simplify and solve for "x"
=(321+x)/5=83
=321+x=(83)(5)
321+x =415
x=415-321
x=94
be sure to check your answwer by plugging x = 94 back into the equation
