Hockey team receive 2 points when they win and 1 pint when they tie one season, a team won a championship with 69 points. They won 12 more games then they tied. How many wins and how many ties did the team have?

Hi,

Let x represent the number of games tied.  Then (x + 12)is the number won

Question states

1*x + 2*(x+12) = 69 total points

3x  + 24 = 69

3x = 45

x = 15, the number of games tied.  27 games won.  (15+12)

CHECKING our Answer

45 + 2*27 = 45 + 54 = 69
