Question 37307: For three days in a row, volunteers picked up trash on a particular beach. They picked up a total of 921 pounds. On the second day they collected 39 pounds more than on the first day. On the third day, they picked up 18 pounds less than on the first day. How many pounds of trash did they pick up on the first day?
Answer by fractalier(6550) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
If we let x = the first day's trash pickup, we can add the three days worth like this:
x + (x + 39) + (x - 18) = 921 so that
3x + 21 = 921
3x = 900
and
x = 300 lbs
