A woman driving a car 14 ft long is passing a truck 30 ft long. The truck is traveling at 50 mi/h. How fast must the woman drive her car so that she can pass the truck completely in 6 s, from the position shown in figure (a) to the position shown in figure (b)? [Hint: Use feet and seconds instead of miles and hours.]
..
length of truck = 30 ft.
length of car = 14 ft.
..
to completely pass the truck the car has to travel a distance of 30+14 = 44 feet.
..
speed of truck = 50 mph
1 mph = 1.46 ft/s
50mph = 73.33 ft/s
..
let car travel at x ft/s
..
they are going in the same direction
effective speed = x-73.33 ft/s
..
distance = 44ft
speed = x-73.33
time = 6 seconds
..
44/(x-73.33)= 6
44= 6(x-73.33)
44=6x-439.98
6x=439.98+44
6x= 483.98
/6
x= 483.98/6
x= 80.66 ft/s the speed of the car
