Question 355755: Brown = x+12 Smith = 2x+9 Robinson = 3x+6 (Use these for the problem. Teacher said their involved...)
So.....
Brown is four years more than twice the age of Smith. In sixteen years Brown will be 3 times as old as Smith is now. What are the ages of Smith and Brown?
Totally stuck on this...
(Don't use Brown, Smith or Robinson for these next ones)
A bookkeeper saves 1/10th of his weekly salary, or 1$ more than the salesman saves. The salesman's salary is 5 dollars a week more than the bookkeepers. The salesman only saves 1/13th of his salary. How much does each earn, and how much does each save?
Sum of three numbers is 55. The first is 8-2x (eight minus 2 times) the second number. The second number is 1+3x (one plus 3 times) the third number. What are the numbers?
I copied these directly from the packet, every word and period. Nothing is out of place, so don't say that these are impossible. Please... :D

Brown = x+12 Smith = 2x+9 Robinson = 3x+6 (Use these for the problem. Teacher said their (they are = they're) involved...)
Brown is four years more than twice the age of Smith. In sixteen years Brown will be 3 times as old as Smith is now. What are the ages of Smith and Brown?
B = 2S + 4
B+16 = 3S
-----------------
B = 3S - 16
B = 2S + 4
------------
2S + 4 = 3S - 16
S = 20
B = 44

A bookkeeper saves 1/10th of his weekly salary, or 1$ more than the salesman saves. The salesman's salary is 5 dollars a week more than the bookkeepers. The salesman only saves 1/13th of his salary. How much does each earn, and how much does each save?
b = book's salary
s = sale's salary
--------
s = b + 5
0.1b = (s/13) + 1
Sub for s
0.1b = (b+5)/13 + 1
13b = 10(b+5) + 130 = 10b + 180
3b = 180
b = 60
s = 65
------------

Sum of three numbers is 55. The first is 8-2x (eight minus 2 times) the second number. The second number is 1+3x (one plus 3 times) the third number. What are the numbers?
3rd number = x
2nd = 3x + 1
1st = 8 - 2(3x+1) = 6 - 6x
---------
x + 3x+1 + 6-6x = 55
-2x = 48
x = -24 (3rd)
2nd = -71
3rd = 150
