You have m(y)=12y. I cannot see what is wrong with that, from the wording of your question.

So, put in 4 years (y=4) we get m=12*4 --> m = 48
put in 0.5 years (y=0.5), we get m=12*0.5 --> m = 6

So it looks fine to me. Again, need to read the original Q just to make sure.
