If a cylindrical tank has a height of 50 ft and a radius of 9 feet with a thickness of 10 inches and a density of 100 lbs/ft. What would be the total weight when it's filled with water?
.
First, determine the volume of the space inside cylinder:
Inside radius = 9-10/12 = 8.1667 feet
vol = (pi)r^2h = (3.14)(8.1667^2)(50) = 10471.03 cubic feet
.
Vol of cylinder (outside diameter):
Outside radius = 9 feet
vol = (pi)r^2h = (3.14)(9^2)(50) = 12717 cubic feet
.
I'm assuming you meant 100 lbs/ft^3 to specify density...
Weight of cylinder:
(12717 - 10471.03)100 = 224597 lbs
.
Weight of water inside cylinder:
(assuming density of water is 62.42796 lbs/ft^3)
10471.03(62.42796) = 653685 lbs
.
Total weight:
224597 + 653685 = 878282 lbs
